

Children's Project

There are various factors which contribute to a poor culture of reading and writing in South Africa – the legacy of apartheid, structural weakness in the publishing industry and poor & ineffective education system to name a few. Jozi Book Fair runs various interventions to encourage and develop a love of books, reading and writing in children.
Aims of the Children's Project
-
Establish reading circles in schools,

Provide reading and writing skills to learners,
-
Publication of the learner's writings, online and in school newsletters to encourage writing,
-
Encourage indigenous language reading, writing and publishing and
-
Nurture and develop a new generation of children writing for other children.
Activities of the Project
-
Reading and Writing skills workshops, creative and non-fiction

Establishment of learner's reading circles newsletters for publication of stories, book reviews and articles

Storytelling for and by young writers to introduce them to the world of books and thus encourage a culture of reading

Meet the author sessions in which, the children meet published authors who provides comment and direction to their writings

Participation in the annual Jozi Book Fair and ongoing JBF events

Facilitate exposure of children's writing to small publishers
