 In recognition of the importance of a strong culture of reading and writing for meeting the various challenges of post-apartheid South Africa, Khanya College launched the first edition of the Jozi Book Fair in August 2009. The overall objective of the Jozi Book Fair was to provide a public and visible platform for taking up the challenges of creating a reading and writing culture.

Some of the major challenges facing post apartheid South Africa are unemployment, skills development and the general improvement in the quality of life for the mass of historically disadvantaged communities. These and many other challenges can be traced and linked to a weak culture of reading and writing in South Africa’s historically disadvantaged communities.
