Small Publishers Project
South Africa has a significant and growing number of small publishers. Many of these do not have large office infrastructure and permanent staffing and they struggle against the odds to publish books, journals and other materials. There is also growing interest in self-publishing as access to the Internet and its various platforms has grown. Over and above providing access to exhibition space at the annual Jozi Book Fair, the JBF project will support these small publishers in a variety of ways.
These include seminars, discussions and workshops on issues affecting small publishers such as distribution, marketing and financial management. The project is also in the process of setting up the Jozi Bookshop as a point of distribution for small publishers and profile small publishers at various international events.
The JBF Annual event provides small publishers, authors and readers with the platform to network on various literature related and publishing isssues. The JBF project will also undertake ongoing activities that promote networking amongst small publishers, authors and readers within South Africa and with readers, authors and small publishers from outside South Africa.
These activities will include profiling the products of South Africa's small publishers at international Book Fairs, publishing conferences and other international platforms. Specific catalogues of various local small publishers will be exhibited at the JBF stalls at these events and links to the websites of various small publishers will be provided on the JBF website.
